บลู-เรย์ ได้รับความนิยมหลังมีชัยในการแข่งขันเรื่องฟอร์แมต

ยอดขายแผ่นบลู-เรย์ (Blu-ray Disc หรือ BD) และเครื่องเล่นแผ่นบลู-เรย์ (Blu-ray Disc player หรือ BD player)ได้รับความนิยมอย่างแพร่หลายในวงการอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์เพื่อผู้บริโภคหลังเอาชนะในเรื่องฟอร์แมต กับ เอชดี ดีวีดี (HD DVD)สวนพิษเศรษฐกิจที่ทำเอาหลายวงการปั่นป่วน

ในงานแสดงสินค้าอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ CES 2009 ที่ลาสเวกัส ปรากฏว่าเทคโนโลยีเครื่องเล่นแผ่นบลู-เรย์ได้แพร่หลายเข้าไปในบรรดาเครื่องรับโทรทัศน์ คอมพิวเตอร์ และเครื่องเล่น ดีวีดี รุ่นใหม่ๆ เป็นจำนวนมาก หลังจากต้องต่อสู้ห้ำหั่นกับเทคโนโลยี เอชดี ดีวีดี และเอาชนะมาได้ประมาณปีกว่าแล้ว
มีรายงานข่าวว่า ยอดขายแผ่นบลู-เรย์ภาพยนตร์ ในสหรัฐเมื่อปีที่แล้วเพิ่มขึ้นกว่า 4 เท่าตัว หรือเกือบ 29 ล้านแผ่นในไตรมาสสุดท้ายของปี

แผ่นบลู-เรย์ ภาพยนตร์เรื่องมนุษย์ค้างคาว (Batman) ตอนล่าสุด ที่มีชื่อว่า The Dark Knight เป็นแผ่นบลู-เรย์ภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกที่ขายได้มากกว่า 1 ล้านแผ่น

1 ล้านแผ่นถ้าเป็นไทยถือว่าเยอะ แต่ถ้าเป็นเมกาถือว่าน้อย ปกติเพลงที่ขายเป็นแผ่นก็เหยียบล้านแล้ว
